enlighten-ed

Project Scope:  Lighten a dark, sandwiched condominium core.

Client Requests:

–  Bring light into a dark kitchen and stair core.

–  Sensitivity to already minimal kitchen storage.

–  Improved dialogue with dining/living room.

–  Engagement with rear yard.

–  Cost sensitivity.

Solution:  Given the limited exterior wall exposure from the southern face this solution capitalizes on ambient light penetration by dematerializing surfaces that were otherwise acting as a light block.  To do this an existing small kitchen pass-through opening was extended around the corner to not only allow more ambient natural light to flow into the kitchen but also increased the scale of the kitchen by visually integrating the kitchen with dinning and living areas as well as external views into the rear yard.  Upper kitchen cabinet storage was replaced two-fold by a deep serving sill that smoothly transitions into a dinning side wall of storage built-ins anchored with credenza language.  Similarly the stairwell wall opens up an important circulation node, and reinforces kitchen lines and material interchange
